R&K Mexico – Tiburón Island Desert Bighorn Sheep Hunts

One of the most exclusive and iconic sheep hunting experiences remaining in North America — free-ranging Desert Bighorn Rams on Shark Island.

Tiburón Island — known locally as Shark Island — sits off the coast of Sonora and spans approximately 463,000 acres of rugged desert mountain country. It is the largest island in Mexico, and it is widely recognized as one of the most iconic Desert Bighorn Sheep destinations in the world. For many sheep hunters, this island represents the pinnacle of Desert Bighorn hunting.

Remote mountains. Limited annual tags. Deep Seri history. Free-ranging rams pursued in one of the wildest sheep hunting environments left on the continent. Very few hunters will ever set foot here.

Through our sister company MX, we secure a limited number of tags each year for hunters pursuing trophy-class Desert Bighorn Rams on the island. Under the R&K Mexico brand, we expect to conduct fewer than four sheep hunts annually. This is not a high-volume operation — and that is entirely by design.

Unlike many Tiburón hunts marketed through third-party booking agencies, R&K Mexico personally operates and guides every hunt conducted under our name.

Hunt Season

Our Tiburón Island sheep season generally begins shortly after Thanksgiving and typically runs through approximately March 15th.

Guides & Experience

Every Tiburón Island hunt combines local Seri Indian guides, experienced Mexican sheep guides, and American guides and support staff.

Many of the local Seri guides have spent their entire lives on this island and have been guiding sheep hunters for generations. Their knowledge of the terrain, ram behavior, water systems, and travel routes is genuinely unmatched — this is the land they were raised on.

Both Justin and his partner Chewy are personally present on every sheep hunt conducted on the island. Hunters will have direct involvement from ownership throughout the hunt, not a distant booking agency handing them off to someone else.

Terrain & Hunting Style

Tiburón Island is massive, rugged, and extremely remote. Because of the island’s size and limited road systems, maintaining mobility throughout the hunt is critical.

Hunting styles on the island may involve:

  • Extensive glassing
  • Spot-and-stalk hunting
  • Hiking and mountain hunting
  • Long-range evaluation of rams
  • Mobile hunting strategies based on ram location and conditions

This is a true fair chase Desert Bighorn hunt in one of the wildest sheep environments remaining in North America.

Lodging & Camp Style

Most Tiburón Island hunts are conducted out of a very comfortable mobile tent camp setup. While the camp is somewhat rugged by nature of the island’s remoteness, food quality and hunter comfort remain a priority.

Hunters can expect:

  • Five-star food and meal preparation
  • Comfortable tent camp accommodations
  • Mobile camp flexibility depending on hunting conditions

There is also one permanent structure available on portions of the island. It should be viewed as practical shelter rather than luxury lodging, but it is a solid and functional option when conditions call for it. The structure includes two bedrooms, bathroom facilities, and basic accommodations built from concrete and cinderblock construction.

Transportation & Travel

Hunters fly directly into Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. From there, two transportation options are available to reach the island:
Option 1 — Private Aircraft

We may transport hunters directly to the island utilizing our Cessna aircraft via the private landing strip on Tiburón Island. This is the fastest and most direct option for smaller parties.

Option 2 — Ground & Ferry Transport

For larger parties or groups that include non-hunting guests, ground transportation is generally required. This route involves approximately a 1.5-hour drive to Punta Chueca, a ferry crossing operated by the Seri Indians, and arrival to camp on the island.

Groups with more than two hunters and/or additional non-hunting guests will typically use the ground and ferry option due to aircraft limitations.

Physical Difficulty

Physical demands on Tiburón Island can range widely — from very manageable to genuinely demanding — depending on terrain, ram location, and how aggressively hunters want to hunt. The island has terrain suitable for a wide range of physical abilities, and our mobile approach and long-range equipment help us accommodate hunters with varying capability levels.

Physical difficulty can range from a 2 out of 10 to a true 10 out of 10 — depending on the ram, the terrain, and how hard you want to push.

Some hunts may involve extensive glassing from comfortable positions. Others may involve steep rocky terrain, long mountain hikes, and all-day efforts depending on where rams are moving. Hunters should be prepared for rugged desert mountain conditions and long days in the field regardless.

A Recommendation Worth Considering

One thing we strongly encourage many hunters to do is hire a local Seri packer to carry personal gear and equipment during the hunt. We consistently see hunters start wearing down around day 3 or 4 when they are carrying their own gear through the mountains every day.

Local Seri packers are generally very reasonably priced at approximately $100 per day. In our experience, this small investment makes a significant difference in energy levels and hunting effectiveness by the back half of the hunt.

Trophy Care & Export

Desert Bighorn Sheep harvested on Tiburón Island require the CITES export process before entering the United States. While that may sound complicated, hunters should not be concerned — our exporter has years of experience handling Desert Bighorn exports and manages all required documentation, permitting, and shipping. R&K Mexico assists hunters throughout the entire process.

Connectivity

Staying connected on the island:

  • Starlink internet is available at all camps and transport vehicles
  • Most cellular service functions near the shoreline and port areas of the island
  • For remote hikes and mountain hunts, we strongly recommend bringing a Garmin inReach or similar satellite communication device

Guide Structure

All Tiburón Island sheep hunts are generally conducted on a 1×1 basis. 2×1 arrangements may be considered if both hunters have similar physical ability, shooting capability, and overall hunting expectations.

Long-Range Shooting & Firearms

Hunters are strongly encouraged to prepare for long-range shooting scenarios before arriving. Most ram opportunities occur in the 300–500 yard range, though rams are regularly harvested at both shorter and longer distances depending on terrain and conditions.

Magnum calibers are preferred for Tiburón Island Desert Bighorn Sheep hunts.
