R&K Mexico – Sonora Desert Bighorn Sheep Hunts

Mature free-range rams on guaranteed tags — physically demanding, deeply rewarding, and built for hunters who want the real thing.

Desert Bighorn Sheep are one of the most difficult and respected big game animals in North America. Sonora, Mexico has become world-known for producing mature free-range rams across vast desert mountain terrain with extremely limited annual permit availability.

R&K Mexico operates a deliberately limited number of Desert Bighorn Sheep hunts throughout Sonora on carefully selected private ranches covering approximately 200,000 acres of sheep habitat. Rather than running a high-volume sheep camp, our objective is keeping hunter numbers low while delivering a highly personalized experience built around mature age-class rams, strong overall quality, and authentic fair-chase hunting.

These hunts are physically demanding, mentally challenging, and designed for hunters who want a true desert sheep experience in rugged Sonoran country. Unlike many sheep hunts marketed through third-party brokers, R&K Mexico personally operates and oversees every hunt conducted under our brand.

What real hunters say about their experience

Guaranteed Tags

All R&K Mexico Desert Bighorn Sheep hunts are conducted using legally obtained guaranteed permits secured through private ranch and wildlife management programs within Sonora. Because these tags are extremely limited, annual hunter numbers remain intentionally low to preserve overall hunt quality, mature ram age structure, and long-term sustainability.

Free-Range Fair-Chase Hunting

Every Desert Bighorn Sheep hunted with R&K Mexico is a completely free-ranging animal living in native Sonoran desert mountain terrain. There are no high fences, no confined hunting environments, and no shortcuts. These are authentic fair-chase hunts conducted across large, rugged mountain systems.

All rams are free-ranging, wild animals hunted in true desert sheep country.

Desert Bighorn Subspecies in Sonora

Depending on region and tag availability, hunters in Sonora may pursue two different Desert Bighorn subspecies:

  • Mexican Desert Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana)
  • Nelson’s Desert Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni)
This gives hunters the rare opportunity to potentially pursue both desert sheep types within the same season.

Ram Quality & Expectations

Our hunts focus on mature, fully developed rams. Every ram is different — some mature animals top out in the 150s, while others develop into exceptional rams pushing well into the 170s and beyond. Our focus is not simply on inches, but on mature age structure, hard-earned fair-chase hunting, and a high-quality sheep experience.

General Ram Range: 150–170″ class
Ram Age: Mature 7–8+ year-old rams
Upper End Opportunities: Occasional 175–180″+ class rams

Success & Hunter Numbers

100% past harvest success — with carefully limited annual hunter numbers.*

R&K Mexico intentionally limits the number of sheep hunters conducted annually to maintain overall quality and individualized hunter attention.

*Past results do not guarantee future outcomes. Weather, shooting ability, physical condition, and hunt conditions may influence results.

Hunt Length & Physical Difficulty

Hunt Length: 10 days
Physical Difficulty: Moderate to extremely demanding depending on ranch, terrain, and the specific ram being pursued

Because these hunts take place across private ranches throughout Sonora, we can often accommodate hunters with a wide range of physical capabilities. Some ranches involve steeper and more physically demanding terrain, while others can provide a more manageable experience without sacrificing overall ram quality. If physical limitations are a concern, ask us specifically when booking.
