R&K Mexico – Tiburón Island Sheldoni Mule Deer Hunts
🦌 2026 SEASON UPDATE: No Sheldoni Mule Deer tags are being offered during the 2026 season. Tiburón Island is home to one of the rarest and most unique mule deer subspecies in North America — the Sheldoni Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus sheldoni). This is the only place in the world where hunters may pursue this animal in its native free-range environment.
Located off the coast of Sonora, Tiburón Island spans approximately 463,000 acres of rugged desert mountains, coastal terrain, foothills, and remote desert habitat. As the largest island in Mexico, it has become legendary among serious mule deer hunters because of its isolated genetics, distinctively dark-colored deer, non-typical antler potential, and extremely limited permit availability.
About the Sheldoni Mule Deer
Researchers believe the Tiburón Island mule deer population has remained largely genetically isolated from mainland mule deer populations for approximately 10,000–11,000 years. That isolation has produced something genuinely unlike anything found on the mainland.
These deer are widely recognized for:
- Very dark, chocolate-colored body coloration
- Dark antlers
- Tall non-typical genetics
- Heavy character and abnormal points
- Unique antler configurations rarely seen in mainland mule deer
- Free-range habitat across the remote terrain of Tiburón Island
- Extremely limited permit availability
Many mature bucks develop the “freak” non-typical characteristics the island has become known for — numerous abnormal points and antler formations you simply will not encounter elsewhere in North America. That combination of rarity, dark coloration, isolated genetics, and non-typical potential is why the Sheldoni has become so highly sought after among serious mule deer hunters.

I had a wonderful hunt and experience with RandK from the inital conversations with Chris about what was available and the booking of my hunt to the end of the hunt itself. Justin is also present and available and was very helpful during my time in Utah. My guide Travis was top notch and his knowledge and experience and genuine concern for me to have a great hunt and experience was evident. The lodge and accommodations were very nice and the food and staff and fellowship with everyone there was outstanding. I hunted Moose @ Timber Ridge/Justin's Morgan Base Camp and have already booked an antelope hunt for next year and am considering a Mule deer hunt and possibly another Moose hunt as well. I highly endorse this organization and know that you will have a great experience if you decide to hunt with RandK. Blessings and happy hunting, Wey Rooks.Posted on Google frank EspoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent Company for a hunt! Outstanding lodge accommodation! Free-Range Hunting
Every Sheldoni Mule Deer hunted on Tiburón Island is a completely free-ranging animal living in one of the wildest and most remote mule deer environments remaining anywhere in North America. No high fences. No confined environments. Just wild deer on a remote island.
All Sheldoni Mule Deer are free-ranging wild animals — hunted in their native island environment. |
Management & Conservation
For the 2026 season, a new long-term management plan has been implemented for Tiburón Island Sheldoni Mule Deer. This is a deliberate, conservation-focused decision — not a pause, but an investment.
As part of this plan:
- No Sheldoni Mule Deer tags will be offered during the 2026 season
- Focus will be placed on improving overall herd population
- Age structure and mature buck development will be prioritized
- Long-term sustainability and trophy quality remain the core objective
Rather than maximizing short-term hunter numbers, the goal is developing a stronger overall herd, improved age structure, and long-term trophy quality for future generations. The long-term objective is building one of the most respected and carefully managed Sheldoni Mule Deer programs in North America.
Future Hunts & Reservations
R&K Mexico expects future Sheldoni Mule Deer hunts to remain extremely limited and tightly controlled. We currently anticipate beginning reservation opportunities for the 2028 season.
Due to the rarity of these hunts, free-range status, and intentionally low hunter numbers, availability is expected to be extremely limited when the program reopens.

Hunt Length & Season Dates
Future Tiburón Island Sheldoni Mule Deer hunts are expected to occur from approximately the last week of November through around February 15th, though exact dates may vary depending on yearly conditions and management objectives.
Hunting Days: | 6 consecutive hunting days |
Total Trip Length: | Approximately 8 days including travel on both ends |
These dates are designed to maximize mature buck movement, overall hunt quality, and long-term herd management goals while maintaining the low-volume, conservation-focused approach planned for the island.
Terrain & Hunting Style
Most Sheldoni Mule Deer inhabit the foothills surrounding the larger mountain systems as well as portions of the coastal terrain across the island. Because of the island’s limited road systems and rugged terrain, hunters should expect a physically demanding and deeply rewarding mule deer hunt unlike anything found on the mainland.
Hunting styles may include:
- Spot-and-stalk hunting
- Extensive glassing
- Backpack-style hunting depending on buck location
- Long-range shooting opportunities
- Mountain and foothill hunting
Shot Distances
Long-range shooting proficiency is strongly recommended before arriving. Most shooting opportunities commonly occur in the 300–500+ yard range, though terrain and specific buck location can influence this in either direction.
Typical Shot Range: 300–500+ Yards — long-range preparation strongly recommended. |
Physical Difficulty
Tiburón Island Sheldoni Mule Deer hunts can vary substantially in physical difficulty depending on the specific buck being pursued, terrain, and hunting approach. This hunt is generally better suited for hunters comfortable with physically demanding western-style mule deer hunting.
Some hunts may involve:
- Backpack hiking
- Remote glassing points with limited vehicle access
- Steep desert terrain
- Long days behind optics
- Extended time in the field away from camp
Because of the island’s size and rugged nature, hunters should be mentally and physically prepared for demanding conditions.
Why This Hunt Is Different
Very few hunters are even aware this subspecies exists.
The combination of isolated genetics, dark chocolate coloration, free-range habitat, non-typical antler potential, limited permits, and the rugged remoteness of Tiburón Island creates one of the most unique mule deer hunting opportunities anywhere in North America. There is no other place on earth where you can pursue a free-ranging Sheldoni.
Our objective is not simply offering another mule deer hunt. The goal is building a truly world-class Sheldoni Mule Deer program centered around conservation, herd improvement, low hunting pressure, and one of the rarest free-range mule deer experiences remaining anywhere in the world.
